Administration
Administration of the IECG Cup is the responsibility of the IECG Cup Directors named by the IECG Council. Currently we have 3 officers to manage the Cup :- Gordon Evans for the Semis and Finals
- Goran Grkinic for the Quarters
- Jean-Luc Duriez for the Prelims
Tournament format
The IECG Cup is our main annual multi-stage tournament. A new cycle is launched once a year by a preliminary round, the duration for a whole cycle being of at last five years.It consists of 4 consecutive stages: preliminary, quarter-final, semi-final and final. If possible in the first three stages a choice is offered between playing by mail or playing on the server. Except for the finals, every stage closes after 13 months, so all games still unfinished at the deadline are adjudicated.
Preliminaries
Participation to the Cup preliminaries is open to all IECG members, regardless of their chess strength. The registrations are open from mid-August to mid-September, and the stage is started on October 1st each year. The preliminary is played in groups of 7 players, single round robin. The first two placed (and all tied) in each preliminary group qualify to the quarter-final stage.Quarter-finals
The quarter-final round is normally launched each year on January 15th. The tournaments are also in principle 7 players groups, single round robin. The first two of each quarterfinal qualify for the semifinal stage.Semi-finals
The quarter-final round is normally launched each year on April 1st. The tournaments are 7 or 9 player groups, single round robin. The winner of each group qualifies to the IECG Cup Final A, and the second placed to the IECG Cup Final B.Finals
The finals A & B are launched each year on July 1st. The size of the tournaments varies between 7 and 15 players according to attendance by the qualifiers.Qualifications
The Cup winner and the second placed are directly qualified for the next year's Cup finals. The winner of the Cup is also qualified for the IECG World Championship.The winner of an Cup Final B, and all the players in an Cup Final A but the two top finishers (who are qualified for the next IECG Cup final) are directly qualified for the next IECG Cup semifinals. In principle, any qualification may be used only once.
